A photographic record of New York’s subway beat

Ed Steele’s account combines a New York City police career with photographs from the subway system he helped safeguard. The material spans routine crime-fighting and encounters with New Yorkers, alongside his experiences during the September 11 attacks. That range places daily work underground in the context of a city facing crisis, with the book presenting the officer’s perspective on its people and guardians. Its visual format makes the photographs a central part of the account, not simply a backdrop to a career narrative.
