AlbakiReads Editorial

A compact anthology of 100-word horror pieces

Built around the drabble form—fiction told in exactly 100 words—this collection gathers more than 60 brief horror tales alongside several longer short stories. The material ranges across romantic, psychological, and explicitly extreme territory, with some pieces connected to Matt Shaw’s earlier books and others presented as new work. Janine Van Moosel’s cartoon-like illustrations sit beside the fiction, creating a visual counterpoint to the collection’s gruesome and unsettling subject matter. The inclusion of the nominated story “Melvin” expands the book beyond its central sequence of microfiction.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Adult horror readers interested in very short fiction
  • Fans of extreme and splatterpunk horror
  • Readers curious about the constraints of the 100-word drabble form

Book overview

A drabble is a work of fiction where the word count is exactly 100 words (not including the title). Presented in this collection are over 60 drabbles from the dark mind of Matt Shaw. Some are inspired by his previous titles and some entirely new and as fresh as rotting flesh can be. With illustrations from artist Janine Van Moosel, this collection has it all: from the romantic, to the psychological, to the very extreme... And, if that weren't enough - there are a number of published shorts too, along with the splatter-punk nominated story "Melvin". This is Matt Shaw's dark and twisted answer to Tim Burton's "The Melancholy Death Of Oyster Boy". Please note: Despite the fun, child-like cartoons - this is NOT suitable for those under the age of 15 PRAISE FOR THE AUTHOR "There is a ferocity about Matt Shaw's writing that is both welcome and also necessary when it comes to horror." - Shaun Hutson, author of "Slugs"
