A photographer’s long view of Valparaíso
Built from a 1993 layout devised by Sergio Larrain, this expanded edition gathers 120 photographs of Valparaíso made between 1952 and 1992. The port city is presented through Larrain’s sustained attention to its changing identity: a place set between the Andes and the Pacific, marked by fading commercial importance as well as the visual contrasts he associated with it. Previously unpublished images extend the earlier selection, while Larrain’s handwritten notes and texts place the photographs alongside his own reflections. A text written for Larrain by Pablo Neruda and an essay by Agnès Sire add further context to this monograph of one of the photographer’s most enduring subjects.
