AlbakiReads Editorial

Observatories, evidence, and the search for cosmic neutrinos

Organized as a collection of chapter-length mini-reviews, this volume surveys high-energy astrophysical neutrinos through two connected lenses: the capabilities of current and planned observatories, and the scientific interpretations of observations and upper limits. Its starting point is IceCube’s discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, which frames a broader examination of potential sources and the questions these measurements raise. The format brings together discussions of instrumentation and astrophysical implications, making the book a snapshot of the field as presented in 2017.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers seeking a technical overview of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and their potential sources.
  • Those interested in neutrino observatories, including their current status and future prospects.
  • Students or researchers looking for a multi-author review volume on astrophysics and particle observation.

Book overview

This review volume is motivated by the recent discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos by IceCube. The aim of the book is to bring together chapters on the status of current and future neutrino observatories with chapters on the implications and possible interpretations of the present observations and their upper limits. Each chapter is a mini-review of one aspect of the subject by leading experts. Taken together, the chapters constitute an up-to-date review of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and their potential sources.
