Participatory art and contested histories in Japan
Koki Tanaka: Vulnerable Histories (an Archive) brings together photography and video documenting the Japanese artist’s staged participatory actions. The project is situated in the period after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster and turns toward immigration, racism, and xenophobia in Japan. Its archival framing connects these pressing social questions with Tanaka’s ongoing documentation of collective actions, making the book both an artist monograph and a record of work engaging with contemporary issues.
