AlbakiReads Editorial

A guided introduction to art and the stories behind it

The seventh volume in Katherine Morris Lester’s graded series uses color reproductions to introduce young readers to notable artworks and their makers. Alongside background on each picture, the text points to how color, line, light, and composition contribute to its storytelling. Cultural and geographical context broadens the discussion, while suggested musical selections offer an additional way to engage with the mood of the works. The enlarged, clearer reproductions are intended to make visual details easier to examine, keeping close looking central to the book’s approach.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

This series of nine graded readers introduces children to a greater appreciation of art, each at an age-appropriate level. For each color masterpiece presented, the child learns something of the story behind the picture and the artist who created it, as well as notes on the use of color, line, and light, and how the composition helps to tell the story the artist intended. Many of the works provide some context of the culture or geography they represent, bringing students to a greater understanding of these differences. Musical selections are even suggested to supplement the mood of the artwork.

These books are a high-quality facsimile of the originals, except for the artwork, which we have replaced with larger, clearer and more vibrant reproductions to allow for better visibility of the details described in the text.
