Electrodynamics beyond the field

Fred Hoyle’s book presents classical and quantum electrodynamics as direct interactions between electric charges, without a field acting as an intermediary. This framework raises a tension with ordinary causal ordering because the interaction is described as symmetric in forward and backward time. The account connects that issue to cosmological boundary conditions, which it treats as essential to whether the theory works. It also contrasts this approach with quantum field theory, identifying freedom from its divergences as a consequence when the required cosmological conditions are met. The book’s subject spans foundational physics and cosmology, organized around the implications of action at a distance.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in classical and quantum electrodynamics.
  • Readers exploring links between cosmology and foundational questions in physics.

Book overview

This book describes the subject of electrodynamics at classical as well as quantum level, developed as an interaction at a distance. Thus it has electric charges interacting with one another directly and not through the medium of a field. In general such an interaction travels forward and backward in time symmetrically, thus apparently violating the principle of causality. It turns out, however, that in such a description the cosmological boundary conditions become very important. The theory therefore works only in a cosmology with the right boundary conditions; but when it does work it is free from the divergences that plague a quantum field theory.
