Koan phrases as material for reflection
Bea Schlingelhoff’s artist’s book brings together 366 capping phrases associated with koan practice, a practice described in the source as fundamental to Zen Buddhism. The collection makes the phrases themselves a point of attention, while also opening questions about how this form of practice sits in contemporary life. With its emphasis on both meditation and intellectual speculation, the book connects a traditional Buddhist context to reflection on self-consciousness and the present day.
