Speculative

Speculative fiction within young adult literature encompasses stories that imagine worlds outside the ordinary, ranging from futuristic societies and advanced technologies to supernatural possibilities and alternate histories. Unlike contemporary or realistic YA fiction, these narratives invite readers to question what could be rather than what is, often blending elements of science fiction, fantasy, or magical realism tailored to teen characters and perspectives.

If you’re seeking to focus your reading in this area, consider whether you’re more interested in dystopian futures, near-future science, magical elements, or speculative frameworks that challenge social norms. Speculative YA stands apart from other young adult genres by its emphasis on imaginative concepts, so narrowing by preferred motifs or themes can help pinpoint the exact branch that best matches your interests.
