Shakespeare’s women, given room to speak

Jo Gatford revisits the women of Shakespeare through original prose paired with erasure poems drawn from their speeches. The collection attends to the gaps in the plays: thoughts left unspoken, perspectives pushed to the margins, and endings the characters never received. Its paired forms make the source material part of the conversation, placing each character’s existing words alongside a reimagining of what might have gone unsaid.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in Shakespeare’s female characters and their perspectives
  • Readers curious about erasure poetry and prose-poetry pairings
  • Readers exploring reinterpretations of classic literature

Book overview

Using a combination of original prose and erasure poetry, The Woman's Part reimagines the lives and desires of Shakespeare's women - their unspoken opinions, perspectives, and unwritten endings. Each piece is accompanied by an erasure poem made from one of the character's speeches. Gatford says of her chapbook, "My aim with this collection was not necessarily to make a grand statement, but to explore the thoughts and experiences of women who were never given the stage time to say what they really thought, or the ending they deserved. Which is probably all any of us really want."
