Wolves in nature and human imagination

Barry Lopez’s account of Canis lupus brings several kinds of inquiry together: natural history, scientific fieldwork, folklore, and the author’s experience with captive and free-ranging wolves. The result is a work that considers the animal both through observation and through the meanings people have attached to it. Its subject sits at the meeting point of wildlife study and cultural history, with the wolf’s influence on human imagination forming a central thread. This revised edition includes a new preface by Nate Blakeslee.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in wolf biology and natural history.
  • Those curious about folklore and cultural ideas surrounding animals.
