Family history meets psychiatric research

Across three generations and between Mexico and the United States, Consuelo Walss-Bass traces a family’s experience of schizophrenia alongside migration, secrecy, financial strain, and loss. Family photographs and remembered events anchor the memoir, while separate passages draw on the author’s work as a psychiatric geneticist to discuss schizophrenia, genetics, trauma, caregiving, and treatment resistance. The book also follows connected family histories, including one shaped by trauma and untreated bipolar disorder. Its central question—why one sibling bears schizophrenia when others share the same family upheaval—links personal memory with scientific inquiry. The account presents knowledge as something pursued amid uncertainty, not as a promise of cure or easy resolution.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • People interested in family memoirs spanning Mexico and the United States.
  • Readers seeking a personal account of schizophrenia and caregiving.
  • Those interested in accessible discussions of psychiatric genetics alongside family history.

Book overview

Why My Sister? is an unconventional work of creative nonfiction, a three-generation family memoir set within a five-generation family history spanning Mexico and the United States. It does not follow a classic plot pattern or reshape lived experience into the orderly narrative readers may expect from literary fiction. Instead, it is a direct report from the battlefield, refusing literary convention by making no tidy story out of what was not tidy: the raw, lived experience of a Latin American and Mexican-American family across generations. Built from lived memory, twenty-four family photographs, and the author's thirty years as a psychiatric geneticist, it follows a family marked by migration, financial strain, loyalty, secrecy, accomplishment, severe mental illness, loss, and survival.

Eugenia was beautiful. Religious. Married young to a promising physician in northern Mexico. Then illness took everything.

Paty was the youngest of her daughters. A model, striking enough to stop a room, a gifted artist, loved by everyone. Then the voices grew louder, and the illness did not care.

Five siblings were raised under one roof, exposed to the same chaos. Four went on to build accomplished lives, though none escaped the family's pain. Why did only one carry the full weight of schizophrenia? That question shaped Consuelo "Chelo" Walss-Bass for a lifetime, first as a frightened child and later as the psychiatric geneticist who crossed a border twice and built a career looking for the answer.

Why My Sister? is her memoir and a sweeping family saga across three generations and two nations. It begins with Eugenia's husband, a formidable Mexican physician whose decisions carry the family between Mexico and the United States. The moves bring possibility, but also cultural dislocation, financial strain, family secrets, and losses that echo through generations. A parallel thread follows Tom and Maria, whose legacy of trauma, untreated bipolar disorder, and silence around suffering joins the Walss family when their son Dan marries Chelo. This is where the book becomes universal. Families carry hidden traumas. Families live with questions no one says out loud. This book speaks to them.

Walss-Bass writes in two registers. The third-person memoir reconstructs the family's experience with unsparing intimacy. Woven throughout, and set in a distinct typeface, are accessible passages on schizophrenia, genetics, epigenetics, trauma, caregiving, treatment resistance, deinstitutionalization, brain organoid research, and why genes are not destiny.

This is not a book that promises a cure or an easy reconciliation. It is a book about endurance, knowledge won at a high price, and the refusal to look away from what a family would rather not name. Written for anyone who has loved someone with serious mental illness, whether a sister, a mother, a father, a son, or a daughter, Why My Sister? stands at the intersection of memory and research. It is at once a three-generation family story, an accessible introduction to what science now knows about schizophrenia, and a reflection on the cost of asking the hardest question of all: Why? Why this person we love? Why this family? Why this life?
