A bargain with a steep price

Set in 1895 Massachusetts, the story links a family’s crippling debt and long-kept secret to a mysterious stranger’s offer. Andrew Dawson accepts a bargain that gives him a new identity as Derrick, but the change comes with a deadline: when the moon eclipses the sun, it will become permanent. His struggle to leave his former life behind gives the premise its central tension, while the heart-for-transformation bargain frames questions of identity, attachment, and what a person might surrender for a fresh start.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

Everything comes at a price. What's yours? In 1895 Massachusetts, Andrew Dawson uncovers a dark secret his family has kept from him his entire life. When a mysterious stranger, Cornelius Phenton, comes to rescue the family from its crippling debt, everything comes to a head, and the truth is revealed.

Andrew makes the deal of a lifetime. The only price to be paid is his beating heart. He takes on the identity of the confident yet arrogant, Derrick. When the moon eclipses the sun, the transformation will be permanent, and Andrew will be gone forever. However, Derrick quickly realizes that leaving his past behind isn't as easy as it seems. Even without his heart, he somehow still loves the life he has left behind.
