A field guide to western wetlands and aquatic plants

Covering more than 300 native and introduced vascular plants, this non-technical introduction is organized to make identification approachable for people without a botanical background. A simplified key first sorts plants into nine recognizable groups; species entries then pair detailed descriptions with line drawings and county-level distribution maps. The coverage spans habitats including lakes, ponds, rivers, marshes, swamps, and bogs, and includes invasive wetland plants such as Kariba-weed. The combination of identification tools and regional distribution information makes the book a practical reference for exploring the plant diversity of the western United States.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Students and others beginning to identify wetland plants
  • Ranchers, consultants, and field users seeking a regional plant reference
  • Readers interested in aquatic and wetland flora of the western United States

Book overview

Western Wetland Flora provides an introduction, in non-technical terms, to the wide diversity of aquatic and wetland plants of the western United States. The book allows students, ranchers, consultants, and others with little or no botanical background to identify the plants found in the region's lakes, ponds, rivers, marshes, swamps, and bogs. The Flora describes over 300 vascular plant species, both native and introduced, and a number of rapidly spreading invasive wetland plants, such as Kariba-weed (Salvinia molesta). Each species is illustrated with a line-drawing, a detailed description, and a county-level distribution map. A simplified key is used to place a plant into one of nine, easily recognizable groups.
