UNESCO’s founding vision in two languages

This facsimile brings together the English and French editions of Julian Huxley’s 1946 policy document, produced during negotiations preparing for UNESCO’s establishment. Huxley wrote from a central role in that process: he served as Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission and became the organization’s first Director General. The document sets out an early vision of international collaboration through education, science, and culture, framed as a contribution to peace and security. Its paired-language presentation also makes the text available in both editions within one volume.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

UNESCO was created "to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science, and culture." No one spoke with greater authority about the plan for UNESCO than Julian Huxley. As Executive Secretary of its Preparatory Commission and first Director General, he was a major influence the organization's original vision. This facsimile edition provides both the English and French editions of Huxley's visionary policy document, first published in 1946 during preparatory negotiations.
