AlbakiReads Editorial

A seasonal search for belonging

Dave Horowitz recasts the familiar shape of “The Ugly Duckling” as a Halloween-to-Thanksgiving tale about a pumpkin who feels out of place. After waiting through October without being chosen, the Ugly Pumpkin leaves the patch to look for somewhere he belongs. His journey leads to a discovery about his identity by Thanksgiving. The premise links seasonal celebrations with questions of difference, belonging, and self-discovery, giving the story a clear place in both Halloween and Thanksgiving reading.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Young children sharing a seasonal picture-book read-aloud
  • Families looking for a story that spans Halloween and Thanksgiving
  • Readers interested in stories about feeling different and finding belonging
