A framework for understanding social interaction

First published in 1961 and reissued here as a full facsimile, Eric Berne’s book lays out the foundations of transactional analysis. The approach examines exchanges between people, treating interaction as a key context in which human behavior can be understood. Berne also presents people as multifaceted, with different aspects coming forward in relation to others. The book connects this account of interpersonal transactions to both individual and social psychiatry, offering a conceptual framework rather than a guide focused on a single therapeutic setting.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in the history and concepts of transactional analysis.
  • Readers studying psychotherapy or theories of interpersonal behavior.
  • Readers who prefer a facsimile of an earlier psychology text.

Book overview

2015 Reprint of 1961 Edition. Full Facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Berne is the originator of transactional analysis, which he made famous with his landmark publication "Games People Play." In this work Berne lays the groundwork for a rational method for understanding and analyzing human behavior. "Transactional analysis" (TA), is a theory in psychology that examines the interactions, or 'transactions', between a person and other people. The underlying precept is that humans are social creatures and that a person is a multi-faceted being that changes when in contact with another person in their world. Berne developed the concept and paradigm of TA in the late 1950s and it has gone on to have continuing influence in popular psychology.
