Zen, consciousness, and ordinary life

This collection brings together six essays on the place of spiritual experience in everyday life. Its subjects range from cosmic consciousness—including Watts’s account of his own experiences—to self-consciousness, LSD and consciousness, and the perceived divide between spirit and matter. Together, the essays examine how spiritual experience and ordinary life might coexist, making the book a focused entry point into Watts’s reflections on Zen and consciousness.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in Zen and Buddhist philosophy.
  • Readers exploring spiritual experience and consciousness.

Book overview

Six revolutionary essays from "the perfect guide for a course correction in life, away from materialism and its empty promise" (Deepak Chopra), exploring the relationship between spiritual experience and ordinary life--and the need for them to coexist within each of us.

With essays on "cosmic consciousness" (including Alan Watts' account of his own ventures into this inward realm); the paradoxes of self-consciousness; LSD and consciousness; and the false opposition of spirit and matter, This Is It and Other Essays on Zen and Spiritual Experience is a truly mind-opening collection.
