A reference vocabulary for scales and melodic patterns
Reprinted from its 1947 edition, Nicolas Slonimsky’s volume organizes scales and melodic patterns as piano scales and melodic studies, with material adaptable to other instruments. Its reference-book format centers on a broad vocabulary of patterns for composition and improvisation, placing practical musical study alongside a systematic catalog of melodic possibilities. The book is presented as a resource across instruments, even though its examples are framed through the piano.
