A child’s life amid conflict in Gaza

Set in Gaza, the novel centers on eight-year-old Ahmed Qaradawi and his family as bombing forces them to move from place to place. Ahmed’s friendship with another boy, Ali, runs through a story concerned with the immediate needs of shelter, food and clothing, alongside the losses surrounding them. The contrast between childhood and the responsibilities imposed by war shapes the book’s account of how Ahmed is forced to grow up while trying to find safety with his family.

He befriends another young boy named Ali, and the novel follows their journey, which is filled with loss and blood. The story follows Ali, Ahmed and his family as they move from one place to another, struggling to conjure up something to eat, a roof to live under or clothes to wear that aren't ridden with blood that is either your own or of someone close to you.
