Trust, care, and a difficult-to-reach dog
Rachel’s time volunteering at an animal shelter brings her into contact with Grrl, a feral collie whose anger and isolation echo her own. Encouraged by a teacher to write, Rachel finds a way to express feelings she has struggled to manage. The story connects that act of expression with the harder work of building trust: caring about Grrl does not immediately make the dog feel safe, and Griffin’s plan to take her home complicates the question of what help should look like. With school, the shelter, and Rachel’s relationship to the dog shaping the premise, the book links animal care to vulnerability and connection.
