Untrained magic in a world without covens

Poppy Ellsworth’s witchcraft has no formal place to develop: the covens that once trained witches were disbanded a century ago. She works at Dead End Soups & Subs, where mishaps tied to her untrained magic complicate an already precarious life. The arrival of warlock Manon McCloud brings an ultimatum and a choice involving men Poppy has kept at a distance. The setup connects everyday work and financial strain with a fantasy world shaped by the absence of institutions for magic, while placing Poppy’s control of her abilities at the heart of the conflict.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in contemporary urban fantasy.

Book overview

Ever since the world birthed the race of witches, there were covens to train them. Unfortunately for Poppy Ellsworth, she was born in the wrong era. Covens were disbanded over a hundred years earlier, and no matter how much magic she could tap into, Poppy found herself slaving away at Dead End Soups & Subs just to make her meager ends meet. Trouble was, no more covens meant no training, and no training led to unavoidable disasters.

Covered in soup and trying desperately not to curse herself again, warlock Manon McCloud was the last person Poppy wanted to see entering her place. Just when she thought her day couldn't get any worse.

Given an ultimatum, Poppy faced a difficult decision. Either she would decide to help the dark and mysterious men she'd always steered clear of, or her magic could become a severe liability, and she stood to lose everything.
