A fresh start at Idyll High

Star Crowley begins high school determined to change course from her middle-school experience and make a friend. After she succeeds on both counts during the first week, an unsettling encounter with a teacher raises questions about his behavior and leaves Star worried that old mistakes are returning. The friendship she has begun to build becomes part of how she faces the complications of high school. The setup brings together the pressures of a new school, self-doubt, and the support a friend can offer when familiar patterns threaten to repeat.

Book overview

Star Crowley goes to Idyll High on a mission: do things differently than she did in middle school. Also, make a friend. Beyond that, she's just happy to not get sent to the principal's office. First week of school, she makes a friend. (She's well on her way to accomplishing great things!) Then, she meets the oddest teacher of her life, and she's afraid everything is going to unravel. She wonders why he acts the way he does, why he speaks and belittles people the way he does. Before she can get out of her own way, she knows she's doomed to repeat her middle school mistakes. The only difference this time? She has a friend to help her through the mess that will inevitably become high school.
