A young pilot enters the Soviet air war

Set in Russia in 1941, the novel centers on 16-year-old Aelya Makarova, a gifted flyer whose life changes with the German invasion. When the Soviet Air Force recruits women, she joins a fighter squadron and confronts obstacles both in the air and within its ranks: rivalries among the women, dismissive male pilots, and a growing gap between her ideals and the motherland she serves. The fighting over Stalingrad brings questions of ability and sacrifice into sharp focus. War, gender barriers, loyalty, and disillusionment shape Aelya’s passage from flight instructor to combat pilot.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in war and military fiction.

Book overview

Russia, 1941. The day the Germans invade, 16-year-old flying prodigy Aelya Makarova is giving flight lessons and thinking about summer vacation. Within weeks, her hometown is destroyed.

When the Soviet Air Force starts recruiting women, Aelya knows how she can fight back: at the controls of a fighter plane. But the Nazis aren't the only foes she needs to face. Her female squadron is split by petty rivalries, male pilots treat them like a joke, and the perfect motherland she thought she was fighting for doesn't exist.

Thrown into the hell over Stalingrad, Aelya will learn not only the limits of her abilities, but what she is willing to sacrifice.
