Two novellas about family fracture and the possibility of change

Shifting Light pairs two stories in which young people contend with the consequences of neglect and family instability. In “Renewal,” teenagers Drake and Tish, whose backgrounds differ, share a Halloween exploration of an abandoned house that takes a paranormal turn. “Residual” shifts to sisters Danny and Angelica, confronting childhood abuse and neglect as their mother lies dying; a mysterious call during a later vacation in Mexico draws them toward an uncertain new life. Together, the novellas connect grief and socio-economic disadvantage with questions of healing, closure, and what to make of an unexpected opportunity.

Book overview

Author Blaire Hoffos Peterson takes an innovative approach to storytelling in Shifting Light, in which she focuses on themes of fractured family relations and the effect on youth of grief and socio-economic disadvantage. The book comprises two novellas, the first of which, Renewal, tells of best friends Drake and Tish (Patricia), teenagers who come from very different backgrounds, but each of whom suffers from neglect in a dysfunctional family. When they set out on an adventure to explore an abandoned house on Hallowe'en, the story veers into the paranormal with a shocking discovery that just may show them the way to healing, and ultimately, to closure and a better future.

In Residual, the second novella, sisters Danny and Angelica struggle to come to terms with the abuse and neglect they suffered as children at the hands of their alcoholic and drug-addicted mother as she lies dying in hospital. One year later, while in Mexico on vacation, they get a mysterious phone call that will catapult them into a shadowy underworld that offers them a life of wealth and luxury they never could have imagined. Good fortune or bad? They'll have to decide.
