A contested case and the questions around it

Lynne D. M. Noble examines one alleged Shaken Baby Syndrome case from a period when such cases drew public attention and families faced court proceedings over infant injuries. The book considers alternative explanations that, according to the description, had been raised as concerns but were not widely disseminated. Its account places the individual case alongside questions about the handling of evidence, access to legal representation, and the treatment of families within the process. The subject is presented through a legal and institutional lens, with the stated aim of bringing the story of Lawrence into public view.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in legal cases involving alleged Shaken Baby Syndrome.
  • Readers exploring disputes over evidence and alternative explanations in child-injury cases.

Book overview

At the turn of this century, Shaken Baby Syndrome hit the headlines as babies, thought to have been injured by their parents were taken into care in large numbers. Parents, often without funds to obtain legal representation, were offered a list of solicitors who would represent them in court. This legal representation was paid for by the very organisation that was removing these babies from their parents.
The outcome of any trial appeared to be a done deal. Courts were informed that there couldn't be any other explanation for the injuries that the babies presented with. Often vital evidence was not heard even if it had been gathered. Injustice upon injustice was thrust upon families too bewildered to defend themselves other than protest their innocence.
This book looks at one particular case of alleged Shaken Baby Syndrome that occurred around the time. It also looks at alternative explanations which although they had been flagged up as matters of concern were effectively kept from public view. It is alright raising concerns but the information it contains needs disseminating and, it was not. One may question why not. In the midst of injustice, chaos, discrimination and lack of professional knowledge, the true story of Lawrence must be heard if we are ever to begin changing things.
