A survival story along the Outer Banks

Set near North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the novel brings together a teenager and his retired-fisherman grandfather in a struggle to stay together. Their escape plan turns into a fight for survival after a storm overturns their old fishing boat and leaves each believing the other has drowned. The Christian-fiction framing also raises a question of faith: whether God will intervene when neither character believes. Family separation, danger at sea, and spiritual uncertainty shape the premise.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in Christian action-and-adventure fiction
  • Readers drawn to survival stories involving family bonds and danger at sea

Book overview

Sixteen-year-old Jeremy Gladstone, orphaned by the horrific death of his mother, now lives with his grandfather Howie, a retired fisherman, over a bait-and-tackle shop near the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Forces beyond their control threaten to separate them, prompting them to hatch a dangerous plan of escape. Their desperate flight involves an old fishing boat that flounders in a sudden storm, tossing them both into the sea. Each believes the other has drowned, and now each must face their own perilous fight for survival.

Will the God in whom neither one believes intervene when all seems hopeless?
