Saboteur

Set against the First World War’s maritime tensions, this historical novel connects sabotage in the ports of New York and New Jersey with a parallel threat in Halifax. Its focus narrows in December 1917 to the ammunition ship Mont Blanc and the explosion that became part of Halifax’s history. The description frames the disaster around an unresolved question: whether it was an accident or the outcome of sabotage supported by German agents. The book’s premise brings together wartime neutrality, covert operations, and the vulnerability of ships carrying supplies across the Atlantic.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • For readers of historical fiction set during the First World War.

Book overview

In 1916, as World War I raged, the United States relied on its neutral status as protection against attacks at sea by German U-boats and continued to deliver war supplies to European countries at war with Germany.

Widespread sentiment within the large German-American populations of New York and New Jersey fostered the belief that America was aiding Germany's enemies and should be punished for her illegal activity. An underground ring of German-American saboteurs working as dockworkers, directed by German agents, carried out numerous sabotage operations against ships destined for Europe.

No one could imagine that there might be a lone German-Canadian citizen carrying out similar attacks in the port of Halifax, secretly supported by German agents in New York.

In Dec 1917, the last voyage of the ammunition ship Mont Blanc unfolds as it makes its way to meet its cataclysmic fate that is forever tied to the history of Halifax.

Was the ensuing explosion an accident or the result of the saboteur's support by German agents operating out of New York?
