Three stories shaped by loss and troubled lives

Retrograde brings together three early stories by Osamu Dazai, each centered on a different figure confronting damage, memory, or an unsettled past. The title story moves through an anguished young person’s life in reverse. “Das Gemeine” pairs an aspiring writer with a dark history and an eccentric violinist, while “Blossom-Leaves and the Spirit Whistle” turns to an elderly woman’s recollection of her ill sister’s last moments. Together, the stories offer a compact view of Dazai’s early fiction through subjects of regret, personal history, and loss.
