A time-traveling encounter with Henry Highland Garnet’s childhood

Spider, Micha, and T.O. travel back to the period when Henry Highland Garnet is a nine-year-old fleeing slavery with his family. Their role is to witness his journey, not alter it, linking a time-travel adventure to the history of slavery, the Underground Railroad, and nineteenth-century America. Garnet’s later life as a preacher and abolitionist orator gives the story a wider historical frame, while the children’s perspective introduces his early escape. The book is presented as the first in a series about young people uncovering lesser-known stories from history, and Chuck Collins’s full-color illustrations accompany LaRoche’s account.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Children ages 9–12 interested in historical fiction and time travel
  • Families, classrooms, or libraries seeking a read-aloud connected to Underground Railroad history
  • Young readers curious about Henry Highland Garnet and lesser-known figures in American history

Book overview

When Spider, Micha, and T.O. are flung back through time, they land beside a nine-year-old boy fleeing slavery with his family. That boy is Henry Highland Garnet, who would grow up to become one of the nineteenth century's most powerful preachers and abolitionist orators, though few today know his name, and fewer still know he escaped bondage as a child.

Guided by ancient drums and a glowing symbol from the past, the three friends and their fearless dog, Sparky, are called to witness a story the world has nearly forgotten. As eyewitnesses to Henry's real journey from slavery to freedom, they come to understand the courage it takes to stand for what is right, and they discover that their mission is not to change the past, but to remember it, and to make sure others never forget.

Rooted in the original research of award-winning historical archaeologist Dr. Cheryl Janifer LaRoche and brought to life by Chuck Collins's full-color illustrations, The Resurrectors is a read-aloud adventure that introduces young readers to a forgotten American hero through the eyes of curious, time-traveling kids. With direct ties to Underground Railroad history and nineteenth-century America, it is built for families, classrooms, and libraries alike.

Book One of The Resurrectors series, where three kids dig up the true stories buried beneath the history books. Because some stories must be resurrected.
