A family relationship under strain

In this sixth volume of Real, wheelchair basketball sits alongside a father-and-son reunion as the story’s central concerns. Takahashi and his father meet again after eight years apart, while both confront the challenges of adjusting to life in a wheelchair and the effects of Takahashi’s childhood in a broken home. The volume connects the practical and personal dimensions of disability with questions of family history, separation, and the damage childhood experiences can leave behind.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in sports manga centered on wheelchair basketball.

Book overview

Eisner-award nominated creator Takehiko Inoue creates a dramatic tale of triumph over adversity. This is the story of three young men whose lives are profoundly changed by their involvement with wheelchair basketball.

Critically acclaimed, award-winning manga artist Takehiko Inoue doesn't pull any punches in this stunning portrayal of people struggling with serious life issues. Masterfully combining rich character development with beautifully detailed line art, Inoue, the creator of the mega-hit masterpieces Slam Dunk and Vagabond, lifts the manga medium to a completely new level of storytelling.

Takahashi has an awkward reunion with his father, who has been absent from his life for the past eight years. As father and son struggle with the difficulties of Takahashi's adjustment to life in a wheelchair, they must also come face to face with how much damage was done to Takahashi as a young boy facing the reality of growing up in a broken home.
