Fairy-tale echoes in rural Arkansas

Asher Price recognizes pieces of Cinderella in his life: a backyard shed, difficult stepfamily members, and a sense of being trapped. Neveah Winters sees parallels with Rapunzel, though her short hair and the truth about her father complicate that comparison. Their paths bring two familiar fairy-tale frames into a contemporary setting, where a talking cat offers commentary and an old pickup stands in for a more enchanted ride. The story’s setup centers on Ash and Neveah working out which tale they are caught in while avoiding Ash’s step-brother. Its Indigenous fantasy classification places the book within that genre, alongside its young-adult fairy-tale reimagining.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in contemporary takes on Cinderella and Rapunzel.
  • Readers who enjoy fantasy involving talking animals and familiar fairy-tale elements.
  • Readers seeking young-adult fantasy set in rural Arkansas.

Book overview

Meet Asher Price, a.k.a. Ash. He lives with his step-mother (possibly evil), step-brothers Gerald (not evil, but not very nice, either) and Elliot (definitely evil). He doesn't sleep next to a fireplace, but he does live in a shed in the backyard. A very nice shed, but still a shed. Ash knows he's a modern-day Cinder...fella... but he's about to learn that his way out of this life comes from an entirely different fairy tale.

Meet Neveah Winters. She knows she's not actually Rapunzel, but she's pretty close. She keeps her hair short, because frankly, having strangers climb up your hair sounds like a terrible way to meet people. Neveah is about to learn that her father isn't the nice, but overprotective businessman she's always thought he was. There is no prince coming to save her, either. She's going to have to climb out of her balcony herself.

There is no fairy godmother, but there is a talking cat. And that cat has a lot to say. Come along and help Ash and Neveah figure out which story they're in while dodging Ash's evil step-brother. There's no pumpkin-turned carriage, but Ash has an old pick-up and for a couple of teenagers in rural Arkansas, that truck is going to have to be enough!
