Particle physics through an allegorical story

Quarks and Sharks introduces particle physics by turning elementary particles and the forces that govern their interactions into characters in a story. Footnotes carry additional nonfiction detail, making the book’s two-pass reading suggestion part of its structure: first follow the narrative, then revisit the notes for deeper explanations. Topics include matter and antimatter, beta decay, positron emission, gluon field confinement, the Higgs boson, Grand Unified Theory, and Intelligent Design. The result brings scientific concepts together with a stated discussion of Intelligent Design, so the book’s scope spans both particle physics and a religious or philosophical perspective.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in introductory particle physics presented through an allegorical narrative.
  • Readers who like explanatory footnotes and are willing to revisit a book to explore its nonfiction detail.
  • Readers interested in books that place particle physics alongside discussion of Intelligent Design.

Book overview

This book attempts to convey the basics of particle physics by telling a story in which elementary particles are characters living out their existence in the subatomic realm.

Although allegorical in nature, a reasonable degree of nonfiction is conveyed within the footnotes. It is recommended to read the book first as a story, then reread it a second time while delving deeper into the footnotes.

The particles (or characters) are governed by the fundamental forces of nature: The Strong Force, Electromagnetism, the Weak Force and Gravity. There are particles composed of both matter and anti-matter; the fundamental forces drive particles to interact with each other. These interactions give rise to new characters in the story.

Concepts such as beta decay, positron emission, nuclear color charge and gluon field confinement are addressed. Elements of Grand Unified Theory are covered as well as an introduction to the Higgs Boson and Intelligent Design.
