Science, secrecy, and a living head

Set in Paris, the novel brings medical experimentation into the realm of science fiction. Young doctor Marie Laurent joins Professor Kern’s clinic and encounters his work on reanimating organs, including the preserved head of his former teacher, Professor Dowell. As Marie communicates with Dowell, the story connects scientific discovery with questions of secrecy, control, and the uses to which knowledge can be put. The description also points to a conflict over whether Kern’s experiments should be exposed and whether Dowell can be freed. This edition is described as unabridged and in a modern translation, with 12-point type and wide line spacing.

Marie begins to communicate with Dowell's head and learns about his fate and how Kern is using his scientific discoveries for selfish purposes.

Kern, wanting to keep his achievements secret, uses Dowell's head to reanimate other people, including creating a new body for the singer Briquette. Marie tries to expose Kern's crimes and help Dowell achieve freedom, but her actions lead to tragic consequences.
