A scientist’s discovery becomes a question of power and responsibility

Set in Paris, Alexander Belyaev’s science-fiction story brings a young doctor into Professor Kern’s clinic, where experiments in organ reanimation conceal the fate of his former teacher, Professor Dowell. Communication with Dowell’s living head gives Marie Laurent a view of how Kern is exploiting scientific discoveries for personal ends. The plot connects experimental science with secrecy, control over other people, and the consequences of trying to expose wrongdoing. This unabridged modern translation also includes an annotation presenting ten facts about Belyaev; the edition is printed in 12-point type with wide line spacing.
