A contested place at Braden University

Justine Alexander’s admission to Braden University comes after a discrimination lawsuit forces the historically white institution to accept minority students. She and three other scholarship recipients enter a campus where racism and discrimination from students and faculty stand against their academic goals, while Dean Joseph Willows offers support. The description’s central conflict shifts sharply when Erica, Justine’s roommate and best friend, attempts suicide in their dorm room. Presented as a graphic novel, the story brings institutional discrimination and close friendship into the same college setting, with a personal crisis complicating the students’ efforts to find their footing.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in graphic novels about racism and discrimination in higher education.
  • Readers seeking stories centered on Black students navigating an elite university.
  • Readers interested in fiction that includes a suicide attempt and its impact on a friendship.

Book overview

An 18 year old African-American student named Justine Alexander has been admitted into Braden University, the most prestigious college in the country, and the school that she and people like her were unable to attend only a year earlier because Braden University was considered a historically white elite school, until the government filed a discrimination lawsuit against the school which they won. Now that Braden University was being forced to accept minority students, Justine and three other students like her were fortunate enough to receive enough scholarship money to attend Braden. Their time at Braden would not be easy as they would have to overcome racism and discrimination from both students and faculty, but they held fast to their goals and each other. Luckily, not everyone at Braden was against them. Dean Joseph Willows was their number one supporter and did all he could to guide them to success, but things take a turn for the worst when Erica, Justine's roommate and best friend attempts suicide in their dorm room while Justine was asleep only a few feet away.
