A scholarship, a family business, and a way out

Hallie Mayhew is balancing the demands of senior year with work as a pest control technician and hopes for a scholarship that would take her far from Santa Barbara. When her college plans are put at risk, the story brings together family conflict, art thieves, rats, and a neighboring boy who complicates matters. The unusual mix of a grisly family trade and ambitions for a distant college gives this coming-of-age novel a clear focus on class differences, independence, and the choices involved in seeking a different future.
