Lacrosse parenting through a mental-health lens

Erica M. Dixon’s guide connects the demands of youth and collegiate lacrosse with the mental-health challenges that can affect athletes. It combines awareness of those challenges with practical coping strategies intended for both players and parents. The book’s origins are personal: Dixon began writing after her oldest son, a lacrosse player, was hospitalized during his freshman season, then broadened the project to include experiences involving collegiate players among her clients. That blend of family perspective and counseling experience gives the guide a specific focus on supporting athletes within the context of the sport.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Parents of lacrosse players seeking guidance on mental health and coping strategies
  • Lacrosse players interested in understanding mental-health challenges in sport

Book overview

The Parents' Guide to Raising a Lacrosse Player: A Mental Health Approach, helps parents and players to understand the impact that mental health issues have on an athlete. This book not only raises awareness but gives both parents and players concrete strategies to cope with these adversities.

Erica Dixon is a licensed clinical professional counselor and a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor. She has over 29 years of experience treating a wide range of mental health and behavioral issues. She owns a private practice in Maryland where she resides with her husband, Mark and two sons. This book began as a way for Erica to process her own feelings after her oldest lacrosse player was hospitalized during his freshman season. She extended the book to include chapters about her own clients; other collegiate lacrosse players struggling with mental health issues. As a result, a short book took form. So, throw it in your bag and read it during halftime. Erica's sincere hope is that this book helps at least one reader.
