A Thanksgiving journey in verse

Lydia Maria Child’s poem, also known as a classic song, frames a family’s horse-drawn sleigh ride to visit grandparents for Thanksgiving. Set in the nineteenth century, the book pairs the verses with Christopher Manson’s wood carvings, depicting winter activities such as sledding and ice-skating alongside the holiday feast. The seasonal journey links winter scenes with the anticipation of a family gathering, while the poem’s song form gives the story a familiar verse foundation.
