Friendship, work, and a summer in Rome

Set around a college study-abroad program in Rome, Amy Buchanan’s workplace romance brings Quinn Riley and Colton Miller’s long friendship into collision with their professional ambitions. Quinn is trying to protect her career counseling job amid campus tensions, while Colton needs the summer to go well as he pursues a tenured position. Their growing attraction complicates both goals, giving the relationship stakes beyond whether friendship can become romance: each must weigh what they want together against what they might lose at work. Rome’s history and the shared apartment provide the backdrop for a story shaped by campus politics, career pressure, and a long-standing bond changing form.

Book overview

Three months, two friends, and one chance to see if "just one time" can turn into more.

Quinn Riley loves three things in this world. The city of Rome, whose complicated history rivals her own; her career counseling job at Billings College, despite toxic campus dynamics; and her best friend, Colton-even if she's fighting a nagging thrum of attraction between them.

When she has the chance to combine all three loves-working on the same study abroad program that Colton's set to teach in-she can't pass it up. Unfortunately, the professors have turned what should be the summer of a lifetime into a test. If she fails, they plan to pass a new policy that will ruin her beloved job. It's an uphill battle, but Quinn's too stubborn to fail.

Colton Miller has never failed at anything. But when Quinn is being decimated by his colleagues, he can't help but stand up for her, even when it lands him in the middle of the ongoing faculty vs. staff feud. Now, in order to secure the tenured position he desperately needs, this summer has to go perfectly. That means ignoring how devastatingly in love with Quinn he's been for over a decade.

But when the two get to Rome, everything shifts. Their shared apartment feels smaller with each charged moment. Those casual touches that have defined their friendship don't feel so friendly anymore. And that "just one time" is anything but. With delectable food, flowing wine, and enough PDA around to turn anyone's mind to romance, the two question if finding forever with their best friend is worth the things they could lose in the process.
