Fairy tales reimagined across six speculative worlds

This anthology brings together six novella-length retellings inspired by familiar tales, from Little Red Riding Hood and Peter Pan to Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. The stories shift those source tales into fantasy, science-fiction and dystopian settings, with plots involving betrothal, stolen identity, forbidden abilities and resistance to oppressive power. Written by authors from Black and/or Latina backgrounds, the collection foregrounds teens of color in adventures shaped by magic, romance and questions of identity. Its varied format offers six distinct reinterpretations rather than one continuous narrative.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in fairy-tale retellings and folklore-inspired fiction
  • Readers seeking fantasy, science-fiction or dystopian stories with romance and adventure
  • Readers interested in diverse-authored anthologies featuring Black and Latina perspectives

Book overview

A biracial teen is forced into a betrothal with an enigmatic lord. A Latina teen races to recover her stolen identity and escape a dark fae court. A Black teen with forbidden abilities rescues his lover from a dystopian regime.

In Once Upon A Realm, familiar fairy tales are reenvisioned and reborn as six authors from Black and/or Latina backgrounds create novella-length stories that transport readers to fantasy, sci-fi, and dystopian worlds. Each story shatters stereotypes and challenges traditional narratives, inviting readers to see themselves reflected in tales of adventure, magic, romance, and strength. Fans of The Lunar Chronicles, A Blade So Black, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, and Cinderella is Dead will fall in love with these fresh, fierce takes on fairy tales.
