A tearoom with a resident witch

A New England house becomes a tearoom—and an unexpected shared home—when Nicky and his mother discover that Old Black Witch is already there. Her visits to the tearoom bring a supernatural source of commotion, while her battered broom and blueberry pancakes give the story its distinctive witch-and-tearoom setting. The source also notes that a blueberry pancake recipe appears on the back cover.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Children ages 4–8 interested in witches and light supernatural mischief.
  • Young readers who enjoy stories set around a family-run tearoom.
  • Families looking for a picture-book-era classic to share with children.

Book overview

When Nicky and his mom buy an old New England house to turn into a tearoom, they are startled to find they must share the house with its resident troublemaker, Old Black Witch. "Boo! Scat, and Ratcha Fratch!" Old Black Witch calls out to all the tearoom visitors. Zooming about on her dilapidated broom, she manages to stir up plenty of fuss and excitement. Old Black Witch and its sequels originally sold more than one and a half million copies, now the "Blueberry Pancake Witch" is back to stay! Try your hand at serving her delicious blueberry pancakes using the bewitching recipe that's on the back cover.
