Everyday scenes become writing material

Heidi’s English assignment calls for 800 words, but she feels she has little to write about. Sitting in her backyard and taking nature walks with her dog, Rainbow, shifts her attention toward the people and places around her. The description frames these observations as the beginnings of stories, with friendship across three generations and two cultures among the book’s central subjects. The premise connects the ordinary details of daily life with the work of noticing and shaping them into written commentary.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Teens and young adults interested in a story centered on a school writing assignment.
  • Readers interested in friendship across generations and cultures.
  • Readers drawn to nature walks and observation as a source of writing ideas.

Book overview

We all have those little pockets in life when almost everything seems to go alright. So how can Heidi be expected to write intriguing stories for English class when nothing ever happens around here?

In her quest to find eight hundred words for a class assignment, Heidi sits in her backyard, intending to bemoan her situation. Instead, it is the introduction to experiences that bring about "adventures for the written word." Her observation of people and places on nature walks with Rainbow, her dog, become charming commentaries illustrating the richness of friendships spanning three generations and two cultures.
