A bloodhound’s work in law enforcement

Jim Pacetti’s account centers on his 12 years working with Melanie, a scent-specific trailing bloodhound in the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department. The searches described range from locating lost children to tracking fugitives, including serial offenders, offering a view of the varied demands placed on a police tracking team. The book also addresses the practical and relational sides of that work: training discipline, tactical precision, risk in the field, and the trust between handler and dog. Melanie’s namesake and her place in Pacetti’s family add a personal dimension to an account grounded in canine law enforcement.
