A family archive opens a path into Unitarian thought

A collection of manuscripts by Unitarian minister Earl Clement Davis becomes the starting point for his grandson Davis Baird’s exploration of religious belief. Baird, who grew up without religion and never knew Davis, considers an approach that rejects supernatural explanations, embraces science, and opposes authoritarian religious and civil governance. The account also presents Davis’s idea of human divinity: people’s capacity to pursue truth, beauty, and goodness and improve the world. The book connects this inherited body of writing with questions of religion and human responsibility in the present.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in Unitarian Universalism and religious history.
  • Those exploring non-supernatural approaches to religion and the relationship between faith and science.
  • Readers interested in family archives as a starting point for investigating religious ideas.

Book overview

This book began with a trunk of manuscripts written by my grandfather, Earl Clement Davis (1876-1953) who was a Unitarian minister from 1905-1953. Born a year after he died, I never knew him.

Growing up without any religion, I was surprised to discover in these century-old writings a compelling approach to religion, one that resonates with the struggles we face today.

My grandfather denied any supernatural aspects of religion. He was an enthusiastic advocate for science. He vigorously argued against all authoritarian forms of governance--religious and civil.

He believed in human divinity--the "living God"--the power of humans to pursue the ideals of truth, beauty and goodness to make the world better, a heaven on earth, what I call "Natural Religion."
