A child-friendly introduction to neurodivergent brains

Using a race car as its central image, Nell Harris’s book introduces how a neurodivergent brain can work and what it may need. The author, who shares that she and her daughter both have ADHD and autism, wrote the story to explain these ideas simply and factually. It also offers small self-regulation strategies, while leaving individual approaches such as medication or therapy outside its scope. Harris presents the book as a starting point for an adult and child to talk about their own needs and what support might help.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Adults and children looking for a simple way to begin conversations about neurodivergence.
  • Families seeking an introduction to ADHD and autism alongside small self-regulation strategies.
  • Young children, as indicated by the source’s baby-preschool categorization.

Book overview

A story to help understand and small self regulation strategies for a neurodivergent brain.

Created and inspired when my daughter received the same diagnosis as me (ADHD + Autism), I wanted to gift her a book that help explained her brain's processes and needs simply and factually, so I wrote one about mine! I use no big words or acronyms that result in 'what does that mean' and bring the reader/listener out of the story.

I envision my books be what I call 'conversation openers'. My dream is that the book is read between adult and the child and then a chat about their individual selves and what can and could be done to manage, assist, uplift and radically love.

In this book, you are not going to find explanations of specific tools or management approaches (such as medication, therapy, etc.) as that is an individual or tailored experience, instead use this book to introduce the concept between adult and child.
