Cooperation across animal and human societies

Peter Kropotkin’s work examines mutual aid as a factor in evolution, bringing observations of animal behavior into conversation with examples from human societies, past and present. Published in 1902 and reprinted here from the 1919 edition, it challenges competition-centered accounts associated with social Darwinism while also questioning explanations of cooperation based solely on universal love. The book connects this argument to anarchist communism, proposing a scientific basis for that political tradition. Its subject spans evolutionary thought, zoology, and social theory, making the text relevant both as an argument about cooperation and as a historical contribution to debates about how societies develop.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in cooperation and animal behavior.
  • Those studying anarchist thought or the history of social theory.
  • Readers exploring historical debates about evolution and society.

Book overview

2017 Reprint of 1919 Edition. "Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution" is a 1902 work by Russian anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin. Kropotkin explores the role of mutually-beneficial cooperation and reciprocity (or "mutual aid") in the animal kingdom and human societies both past and present. It is an argument against the competition-centered theories of so-called social Darwinism, as well as the romantic depictions of cooperation presented by writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who argued it was motivated by universal love rather than self-interest. "Mutual Aid" is considered a fundamental text in anarchist communism, presenting a scientific basis for communism alternative to the historical materialism of the Marxists. Many biologists also consider it an important catalyst in the scientific study of cooperation.
