A mouse family’s urgent dilemma

Mrs. Frisby must relocate her family before danger reaches their home, but her youngest child is ill and cannot be moved. Help comes from the highly intelligent rats of NIMH, whose solution brings the two families into a relationship of mutual assistance. The central predicament links a child’s vulnerability and a mother’s responsibility with questions of cooperation between very different communities. The story’s animal characters and perilous circumstances place it within children’s fantasy, while the practical problem of protecting a family gives its adventure a clear emotional and ethical focus.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Children ages 9–12 interested in animal-centered fantasy and adventure.

Book overview

"Thoroughly engrossing, thought-provoking fantasy." --School Library Journal (starred review)

Some extraordinary rats come to the aid of a mouse family in this "treasure of a book" (The Times, London), the Newbery Medal-winning classic by notable children's author Robert C. O'Brien.

Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved.

Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.
