A comparative inquiry into ape intelligence
Wolfgang Kohler uses experiments with anthropoid apes to investigate intelligent behavior. The book asks two connected questions: how ape and human intellectual capacities relate, and what makes an act intelligent in the first place. That combination gives the experiments a broader purpose than measuring ability alone. They serve as a basis for thinking about intelligence across species, placing the book at the intersection of animal psychology and the psychology of thought.

Kohler's classic analysis of the intelligence of apes marks a turning point in the psychology of thinking. Through meticulously described experiments, his two-fold aim is to ascertain the degree of relationship between the intellectual capacity of anthropoid apes and of man and to gain insight into the nature of intelligent acts."
