A practical guide to the Maestro Impro format

Keith Johnstone’s guide explains an ensemble improvisation format built around audience-scored rounds: performers are paired for scenes, directors can offer guidance, and players are eliminated until one remains as the Maestro. Alongside the format’s history and underlying theory, the book covers the skills, components, and practical structure involved in putting on a performance. It also includes prompts for group discussion and notes intended to support both newer and experienced Maestro groups. The source notes that producing or performing Maestro Impro requires rights through the International Theatresports Institute.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Improvisers and directors learning how to run Maestro Impro
  • Groups seeking a reference for the format’s structure and components

Book overview

Maestro Impro(TM) is an ensemble format featuring a large cast and directors. The show structure is an elimination format where a mix of improvisers are randomly chosen to play scenes with each other. Two Directors set up scenes and (if necessary) direct the players when needed. All scenes are scored by the audience based on how much they enjoyed it. The players given the highest scores continue while those with lower scores leave the show, eliminated after each round until only one improviser remains. This player is The Maestro.

The performers understand that Maestro is most effectively played with benevolence and good nature towards the other players, with the ultimate goal of creating an enjoyable evening for the audience leaving them with memories of engaging scenes full of variety.

This official guide book, approved by Keith Johnstone, is a resource for information and inspiration about how to play Maestro Impro(TM).
